October 2006

Notes from October 24, 2006 CAMBC Club Meeting

At Anna’s Pizza, 7:00 p.m.

Next Club Meeting: TBD

Attendees: Board members in attendance: Will Sanford (President), Jason Hiser, Ted Gayle (Treasurer), Marty Quinn (Secretary). 19 total in attendance. See end of document for (almost) full list of attendees.

Topics discussed:

  1. Non-profit 501(c)3 application revision submitted to IRS. CAMBC received comments on the original non-profit application submission. Board members responded to those comments and approval of the club as a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization is pending.
  1. UVA Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was submitted to the director of UVA Outdoor Recreation. Awaiting response from UVA.
  1. Albemarle County MOU was submitted to the Department of Parks and Recreation. Awaiting response from county.

  1. Walnut Creek Park Kiosk has been constructed. If you are out at Walnut, look for in the circular traffic island in front of the pavilion. CAMBC will maintain one of the three sides of the Kiosk with mountain bike related info. Suggestions for what to post are welcome. This Kiosk was paid for in part by an IMBA/Clif Bar grant CAMBC received last year.

  1. Rides
    1. Women’s Ride has seen low turnout as of late – may be restructured for next year – suggestions and other ride leaders welcome. Contact Carey Hill @

clhill@hotmail.com

  1. Night Rides – tis the season. Look for a night ride at DelFosse Vineyards in Nelson county in the near future. Also look for beginner night rides for folks who have never been out in the dark of night and would like to give it a try. Lights can be borrowed from a few generous club members so feel free to ask if you’re interested.

  1. WILD RIDE had a great turnout – ~32 riders – and hit the peak of the fall colors in the mountains. Advocacy efforts continue:

    1. Our representatives from CAMBC, SMBC and IMBA have met with the Wilderness Coalition folks over the last 2 years and made a lot of progress redrawing the wilderness areas to carve our most cherished trails out of the wilerness areas thus preserving them for mountain biking. Work remains but much has been gained.
    1. The definition of a Roadless Area is the most recent threat to our trails in the George Washington National Forest. Much of the area between Rte 33 and Rte 250 are currently designated as roadless areas but much of it could be opened to logging under the proposed redefinition of a roadelss area.

  1. Fall Foliage ride was a success. Members of CAMBC helped lead some rides for the Fall Foliage tours at Sherando. The timing was right to see some peak fall colors.
  1. Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day (TAKMBD) had a lower turnout than expected (most likely because it had to be postponed for a week due to heavy rains) but nevertheless, those kids that were there had a fabulous time. And the event received TV News Coverage from both FOX and CBS news. Look for video clips of the news features on the CAMBC website soon. And thanks to all the events sponsors: Albemarle County

Parks and Rec, IMBA/Clif, C’Ville Bike and Tri, and Blue Wheel Bicycles.

  1. The Panorama Paranormal saw about 100 people pedal for 6 hours around the manicured trails at panorama farm. This venue is now closed but was opened for this event (and may be open for future events – but remember it is currently closed to mountain biking.)
  1. CAMBC now has business cards – contact a board member if you’d like one/some.
  1. CAMBC also now has full color, tri-fold brochures. Look for them in local shops.

  1. At the Albemarle County Planning Commission meeting the Preddy Creek area was a topic of discussion. The biking community, led by CAMBC, will join forces with the Horse Enthusiast Groups in order to plan the new trails expected.

  1. CAMBC will host a workday on Nov 4th at Mint Springs Park.
  1. Patricia Byrom Park – $400k has been budgeted for the construction of a parking area and general access improvements. Byrom park is a priority over Preddy Creek because of this.
  1. With the addition of 3 new venues to our area CAMBC will be looking for volunteers to lead trail maintenance crews. We will have a lot of trail building opportunities for the nest couple of years and having more people comfortable leading work crews will improve our efficiency as a club to get these areas ready for bikes and therefore benefit the community. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact Will Sanford at sanfordwill@hotmail.com Volunteers would organize workdays at their convenience, have keys to the trailer full of tools, and will be trained in trail building techniques and tool usage.

  1. CAMBC has applied for a visit from the IMBA Trail Care Crew (TCC) in 2007. The last time TCC was here we had a great workday at Walnut Creek Park and got a tremendous amount of work done. Keep you fingers crossed.
  1. CAMBC will begin leading an Intro to Night Rides night ride once a month. Anyone interested in trying night riding should be on the lookout for an announcement. And any CAMBC members that are comfortable loaning their light to a newby, or anyone with an old set of lights, let someone on the CAMBC board know and we will put that light to use.

  1. CAMBC is looking into the possibility of night riding at Walnut Creek Park. It is currently forbidden. CAMBC will be talking with the County Parks and Rec and hopefully can work something out.
  1. Another option for night rides is Shawn Tevendale’s Farm. Shawn has been gracious enough to let the CAMBC list serve know that his farm is open for night rides but you must contact Shawn directly to schedule the ride. Send an email to the CAMBC list serve to contact Shawn.

CAMBC Event Planning:

  1. Boys and Girls Club Cycling Challenge, Sep. 16-17, 2006 – Team of 11 boys and girls (13-18) who have not cycled before are training this summer to complete a road cycling century. B&G Club would like CAMBC to:

    1. Ride along with the Challengers

Please contact Jason Hiser (jdhiser@gmail.com ) if interested in volunteering.

  1. Boys and Girls Club Mountain Bike Challenge Project In development. This would be a similar idea to the road cycling challenge, to train kids for some sort of mountain bike racing goal. B&G Club is currently soliciting ideas for places to ride and/or event to train for.

a.  Here’s a listing of some of the possible goals/ideas that were brainstormed:

  1. Train the youth team to participate in 2-3 local mountain bike races

  1. Train the youth team for 24-hour relay race

  1. Teach kids about bike maintenance and trail building techniques

Interested in getting involved with this project? Have further ideas? Please contact the

CAMBC board (board@cambc.org )

  1. Take A Kid Mountain Biking, October 7, 2006. This event is for kids aged 8-18 yrs old and will be held at Walnut Creek Park. We had a very successful event last year which included a skills course developed by Craig Spear and several rides led by many, many CAMBC members.

We need volunteers to help publicize, plan, organize, and lead rides for this year’s event. If interested, please contact Michele Co (michele.co@gmail.com). (Alia at ACCT noted that Community Bikes has a small fleet of bikes that might be available for kids without bikes to use.)

  1. Fall Foliage Festival, October 21, 2006. CAMBC has been asked to lead a mountain bike ride at Sherando for the Fall Foliage Festival (http://www.shenandoahbike.org ). The ride last year led by Craig Spear, Ted Gayle, and Jason Hiser was very successful. We need volunteers to help mark the route and lead/sweep the ride. If interested, please contact Craig Spear (spear_craig@yahoo.com ).

  1. Wild Ride, October (date TBD). This is an event to celebrate mountain bike access and heighten awareness of trails whose access might be threatened. The first 3 were held at Sherando. There is a possibility that this year’s Wild Ride will be held at another venue whose access to mountain bikers may be threatened. Volunteers are needed to help bring this event together. If interested, please contact Marty Quinn (meq4q@yahoo.com ).

General Updates:

  1. Membership and Financial State of the Union. 73 paid members. $1967 in the CAMBC account ($500 is earmarked for kiosk to be built by Albemarle County at Walnut Creek Park).
  2. Trails and Advocacy Updates
    1. Mint Springs trailwork has been approved by County. This issue was put forth by a member at our last meeting. Will Sanford met with Dan Mahone (County) to discuss possibilities. In summary:
      1. Mint Springs is 450-500 acres of existing Albemarle County park land, whose primary users are hikers, although some bike riding has been occurring without issues.
      2. Care should be taken not to offend the existing trail users, but CAMBC has been given verbal approval to:

  1. Perform trail maintenance to handle trail sustainability issues (reroutes)
  2. Ride bikes on the trails, but, please respect all other trail users.
  3. Build new trails, if approved by the County, according to the following process (similar to the current process at Walnut):

  1. CAMBC develops topo map showing new trail location and gives to the County for approval

  1. If approved, CAMBC flags the route and does a walk-through with County for inspection
  2. If approved, CAMBC builds the flagged route
  3. Trailwork hours donated by volunteers will be good towards earning a County Park pass.
  4. MOU draft is in progress
  5. Next trailwork day may be here. Next several trail work days at Mint Springs will be to handle trail sustainability issues.
  6. Walnut Creek Park – County has given ok to spray the poison ivy. Park users are encouraged brush the trails at their leisure. For trailwork hours credit towards a park pass, please email info@cambc.org with the names of the people in your group, how many hours you worked, and what type of work was performed. Note that a typical “workday” is 2 to 3 hours.

  1. O-Hill Liaisons. CAMBC Board and interested members met with Mark Voorhees, Dept. of Outdoor Recreation, UVA

  1. Designated Keith Payne, Marty Quinn, Jay Dicharry as CAMBC liaisons, who will organize trail work events.

  1. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is being drafted to send to Mark Voorhees.
  2. Fluvanna opportunity, good for those who live near Lake Monticello. There is a private owner who has ~3-4 miles of trails on his land. Trails are tight, twisty, and need working in. Owner rides once/twice a week and may be willing to lead other people around after

5pm during the week. Contact Will Sanford (fattirewilly@yahoo.com ) for more information.

  1. Walnut Creek Kiosk. Still in the County’s backlog of projects to be handled. Completion time is currently unclear due to unexpected passing away of the hired contractor.
  2. Preddy Creek. There will be a public meeting held by the County in mid-to-late September to discuss. We need community support in attending this meeting to voice the desires of mountain bikers. Please watch the listserve for announcement of the meeting date. Parks and Recreation has also moved Preddy earlier on the budget consideration to the 2007-2008 budget year. (It was previously slated for 2008-2009 budget year, so this is great news!)
  3. Rte. 810. This area is still awaiting proper VDOT approved line of sight entrance.
  1. Sherando Camping Trip report (7/22/06). Mary Jane Strickland and Craig Spear reported that the Sherando camping trip had a modest turnout, but that everyone had a very nice time. The weather was perfect and the trails were great. Rides were held at Sherando and Whetstone Ridge. If you couldn’t come this year, please consider attending next year!
  1. VDOT Bicycle Map. CAMBC recently submitted listings for Walnut Creek Park and Lake Sherando as riding venues for a proposed VDOT bicycle map.

  1. CAMBC Brochure. Jay Dicharry has designed a beautiful brochure for the club. Keep an eye out soon for the brochures in local shops.

  1. Recurring ride reports (WNR, SSR, Beginner, Women, Fast). All rides are going well. If you’re interested in helping lead some of these rides, please contact info@cambc.org.

Status Updates

  1. Trailwork and Advocacy Activity

  • National Trails Day Event with RTF. 10 CAMBC members donated 35 trailwork hours to help build 3 new trail segments on RTF including a new bridge. Estimated new mileage is around 2.5 miles. Will Sanford participated in and organized the coordination of the project from the CAMBC side.

  • Delfosse at Deer Park trail opening. ~3-4 miles of new trail were finished (trail breaking started in March, 2006) and opened on June 3 (National Trails Day). CAMBC was represented by Ted Gayle. There was a good turnout at the opening ceremony. These trails will be multi-use and open to hikers and mountain bikers, with scheduled ATV use days.

  • Whetstone Ridge. On May 6, a group of 18 volunteers from CAMBC and SMBC helped brush most of the Whetstone Ridge trail, putting in over 200 hours of trailwork. Thanks to the volunteers for all their hard work! This work has impressed the Forest Service. Now, get out there to see the trail! (Near Blue Ridge Parkway, Mile 28).

  • Trail tools – 1 new brusher and 3 new McLeods have been purchased

  • Preddy Creek – CAMBC Board met with Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, Albemarle County Parks & Recreation, and IMBA Trail Solutions (Rich Edwards) to discuss Preddy Creek. The BOS is in favor of classifying Preddy Creek as park land and is moving it along the administrative process. This may sound like a small step, but it is important and is great news!

  • O-Hill Liaison. Page Hufty has graduated and will be leaving us. He is looking for a CAMBC contact w/UVA. Interested? Contact Page (jph3d@virginia.edu).

Marty Quinn and Keith Payne expressed interested

  • Chris Greene Lake. Albemarle County is interested in building a beginner-level mountain bike trail at Chris Green Lake. CAMBC referred the County to Rich Edwards of IMBA Trail Solutions as a possible group to perform the trail building.

  1. Event/Trip/Ride Reports

  • Memorial Day Asheville trip to Bent Creek Trails was awesome! Come on this trip next year!

  • VA Mountain Bike Festival in Stokesville on Memorial Day weekend was a hit. ~10 CAMBC members attended and had a good time. A portion of the proceeds earned at the festival will be donated to CAMBC.

  • SSRs (Sunday Social Rides) are being held and attended regularly;

  • BRS (Blue Ridge School, private venue) rides are going well. CAMBC donated an IMBA Trail Building book to the school as a token of thanks for opening their trails to us.
  • Women’s Rides have started slow, but good turn out last week.

  • Beginner Rides are well attended drawing many intermediate riders wanting low pressure rides, and a few true beginner types. Mixed weekday/weekend schedule is working well

  • WNR’s are well attended. Sue George is resigning as leader. Dave Wotton is stepping up to take over organizing the WNR. Email him if you want to help!

  1. CAMBC Promotion

  • Stickers. Clint has ordered stickers and they will soon be available for public consumption.

  • Banner. Keith has investigated the price of producing a banner with Performance Graphics. Price quoted was $192 for a 3’ by 8’ banner, single color. Additional cost of $40-$50 for cleaning up the CAMBC graphic. Anyone in the club have skills they want to donate?

  • Brochure. Jay has brochure in camera-ready format, just need to coordinate getting a paper copy to the County for copying.

  1. Non-profit Status

  • Sue George is working on non-profit status application (IRS Form 1023, application for official 501(c)(3) classification). Michele Co and Al Inigo have offered to help.

And there was much rejoicing…

Attendees: Board Members in attendance: Sue George (President), Matthew Wikswo, Michele Co (Secretary), Ted Gayle (Treasurer), Will Sanford. See end of document for full list of attendees.

General Announcements:

  1. CAMBC has recently incorporated. CAMBC was started in summer 2003 and has grown to the point where we have gone through the incorporation process with the VA State Corporation Commission (March, 2006). Our next step is to file for non-profit status with the IRS (aka 501(C)(3) designation). Are there any members with experience in this area who are willing to help in some capacity?
  1. Central VA Mountain Bike Club (Lynchburg) recently contacted CAMBC and let us know that CAMBC is being used as an example to help get their club going.
  • They have suggested an interclub ride at Whetstone Ridge. The ride is approximately 11-12 miles of singletrack with some road miles to connect. Dates are in the planning.

  1. News/Announcements from VA IMBA State Representative, Chris Scott:

  • May 6-7, 2006: Weekend at Douthat State Park

  1. Saturday, May 6: brushing party/trailwork
  2. Sunday, May 7: formal group ride

  • Memorial Day weekend: VA Mountain Bike festival

  1. This festival will be a fundraiser for the proposed statewide VA Mountain Bike Association. To be held in the Stokesville area.
  2. Registration is already open and is being handled through the IMBA website (http://www.imba.com)

  1. General Reminder: Everyone should feel free to use the listserve (email address: mtb@cambc.org) for posting rides.
  1. We need volunteers! If you want to learn more or help with any of the items listed in the meeting notes (or if you have other ideas you’d like to suggest), please contact us! (info@cambc.org or for the CAMBC Board: board@cambc.org)

Financial State of the Union and Membership:

  • Club account currently has a total of $1856 ($500 is for IMBA/Clif Bar Grant for building a better kiosk at Walnut Creek Park. This $500 is earmarked to go to Albemarle County Parks & Recreation Department who will be handling the design and build of the kiosk). Net account total is ~$1356.00.

  • 65 current paid members

Status Updates

  1. Trail Work.
    1. Eagle Scout Project. Will reported that a Boy Scout and his parent organized an Eagle Scout project under Will’s supervision at Walnut Creek Park in March. The troop built a trail reroute near the chimney on Wilkens Way and donated a total of 40 hours of trailwork. Any other groups looking for community service hours, please contact CAMBC at info@cambc.org.

  1. Walnut Creek Park. Ted reported that the trails have been looking very good. The last several trailwork days have had spectacular attendance (~20 people each time).

  1. Walnut Creek Park kiosk. CAMBC won a $500 CLIF Bar/IMBA grant last year for improving the kiosks at Walnut Creek Park. Albemarle County Parks and Recreation is handling the planning and contracting of the work for the kiosk and is providing additional funds to support the new kiosk. Will reported the current status:
    1. An elaborate kiosk design has been developed (estimated cost $2000)
    2. Contractor bids were taken and a contractor was selected
    3. There were some delays with the project due to serious health problems for CAMBC’s contact person at the County
    4. There are additional delays due to the unexpected passing away of the selected contractor. It is expected that the contractor’s crew will complete all outstanding projects.

  1. Delfosse Trail at Deer Rock

  1. Ted reported that in March, Nelson County and IMBA Trail Solutions started work on a new trail system near the Delfosse Vineyards in Nelson County. Several CAMBC members were in attendance to help (thank you!!!!).
  2. The trail system will be geared towards off-road cyclists and ATV use (ATV use will be allowed only on scheduled days, once per month). Goal is to have the trail open in early June 2006.
  3. Volunteers still needed from mid-April through June. Weekday and weekend opportunities available. Working alongside the IMBA Trail Solutions Crew is a great way to learn about trail design and trail maintenance. If interested, please contact Ted Gayle (tedgayle@yahoo.com).

  1. Lake Sherando Trails. Matthew reported that regular trailwork has been performed here. Some needed work has been suggested in the Slacks Trail area.
  2. Byrom Park (Rte 810/Whitehall area). Sue reported on behalf of Al Inigo who reported via email that Bob Crickenberger from Albemarle County reports that there has been some progress towards identifying a possible access entrance that may pass VDOT approval. This entrance would be on land not currently owned by the County, but is owned by the Byrom family. The next steps are to propose the new entrance location to VDOT for approval. Then, if VDOT approves of the entrance, an agreement with the Byrom family regarding the land in question will be negotiated. This is great progress as the Byrom Park project has been delayed for some time due to the lack of a VDOT-acceptable entrance.
  3. Whetstone Ridge. Marty Quinn, Andy Kinley, and Matt Day have gone out and done a lot of trail clearing on Whetstone Ridge to make it more rideable. Potential group ride with Central VA Mountain Bike Club (Lynchburg) in the planning.

Please thank these sponsors for their support of CAMBC when you go in to visit them.

  1. Events Planning

  1. Blue Ridge School Festival. Blue Ridge School has expressed a desire to co-host an event (Festival? Clinic? Other?) We need volunteers to form a committee to brainstorm ideas and coordinate with the Blue Ridge School on the resulting ideas. (We would like to avoid considering a race to avoid any possible conflict with the local cycling clubs that are racing-oriented.) If you have ideas or are interested in participating in such a committee, please contact either Sue George or Craig Spear.

  1. Asheville trip. Ted is organizing a camping/riding trip in the Asheville, NC area for Memorial Day weekend. Camping will be at Bent Creek Park. Please contact Ted if interested in participating.

  4. Annual May Cookout. Will reported that there will be a May cookout sometime before Memorial Day to get together to do some group rides and distribute the Walnut Creek Passes earned by those who have regularly attended trailwork.

Fall Foliage Festival Craig Spear, Ted Gayle Mary Jane Strickland

Summary of ideas from members suggested at the meeting:

  • Donation box. Suggested that a donation box be constructed and brought to group rides, possibly longer group rides if it doesn’t make sense for some rides.
  • Club Gear. There is an interest in getting more visibility for CAMBC especially at trailwork days. Ideas suggested were t-shirts or banner. Clint Barnett has been looking into stickers for the club. See table below for summary of information (given by Clint via email after the meeting). Clint has volunteered to lay out the initial cash if necessary to purchase the stickers as long as CAMBC can reimburse him the cost. (Profit would go to CAMBC). He recommends SOS, because:

o  Their stickers are bigger, and people will have a better chance of seeing what the sticker says.

o SOS can use the format of the CAMBC logo the way it is (JPEG). Blue Ridge wanted a different format from JPEG.

o  Most of the people at SOS are mountain bikers, members of the SMBC.

o  CAMBC can make an additional $35 by purchasing from SOS, due to the cheaper price.

  • Publicizing Regular Rides and TAKMBD. Several people suggested publishing notices of our regular rides and Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day in various free publications/websites including (not limited to) Computers4Kids, local schools, C’ville and online community calendars.

  • Douthat group ride. Idea for a Douthat group ride/weekend suggested. St. Patrick’s Day? April Fools’ weekend?
  • Take a Parent Mountain Biking. Family-oriented ride idea.

  • Take a Dog Mountain Biking. Dog-friendly ride idea.

Status Updates

  1. IMBA/Clif Bar Grant. Will Sanford reported that money has been received. CAMBC plans on giving money to Albemarle County who will perform the building of the kiosk with matching funds. Albemarle County is currently in the process of soliciting bids for the work.

  1. CAMBC Brochure. Jay Dicharry designed brochure passed around for members to review. Some comments/suggestions for changes have been gathered. Those in attendance liked the design, had some text revisions.

  1. Bylaws & Incorporation. Julie Jackson updated the club. CAMBC now has established bylaws and articles of incorporation and will be filing for incorporation soon. Eventually, the club may try to file the official 501(C)(3) paperwork (Form 1023). Julie says that if the club has less than $5000 annual gross receipts, we do not need to file the paperwork and we are automatically exempt if we meet the 501(C)(3) requirements.

  1. Advertising. Will and Ted reported that CAMBC now has sold 2 advertising spots on the club website to C’ville Bike & Tri and Bike Factory. These ads are now posted on the cambc.org website. Please thank these shops for their support of CAMBC when you go in to visit them. Other local shops, Blue Wheel Bicycles, Performance, and Basic Cycles (now out of business) were also approached.

  1. Trail Work. Will reported that the club has purchased 2 sets of chainsaw safety gear and first aid kit with the revenue from advertising. An anonymous donation has also been given to purchase a McLeod tool. An Eagle Scout troop will be doing a reroute of Wilkens Way at Walnut Creek Park. More trailwork days will be announced soon. REMINDER: If you volunteer for 3 trailwork days, you receive a free pass to Walnut Creek Park

  1. 810 Byrom Park. Will and Al Inigo (via email) reported that the Byrom Park project is still held up by lack of an entrance area that complies with VDOT visibility requirements. Negotiations with Byrom family and adjacent landowners has begun.

  1. Freeride Area in Walnut Creek Park. Will mentioned that there is some interest in developing a freeride area in WCP. Jeff Elmore expressed interest in pursuing/getting involved with this.

  1. Fundraising for 2006

  • Work UVA Race as volunteers in exchange for donation. Will talked with Page about the possibility of a donation in exchange for CAMBC volunteers at the 2006 O-Hill Meltdown. Page agreed.
  • Leading ride for UVA Outdoor Social Club in exchange for donation was suggested, but no outcome decided.

  • Club stickers. Clint Barnett re-raised the stickers idea. See previous summary under Club Gear idea.

June 2005

Notes from June 21, 2005 CAMBC Club Meeting

At Anna’s Pizza, 7:00 PM

Next Meeting:

• Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at 7:00 PM at Anna’s Pizza

Announcements:

1.CAMBC is pleased to announce $330 anonymous donation to the club, ~ $250 of which has gone to purchase a BOB trailer for upcoming CAMBC work days. Other money will go toward additional tools. Club members may borrow the BOB trailer when not in use for maintenance. Contact: Will Sanford.

2.CAMBC has a new website! Thanks to Mike Smoot for his hard work to put it together!

3.CAMBC members participated in the RFT workday on National Trails Day in June. About 5-7 members attended and worked on various projects.

4.Craig Spears represented CAMBC at the St. Anne’s Belfield Earth day festival this spring. He spread the positive word about mountain biking.

Subcommittee Work – Goals and Updates

1.WCP Trail Maintenance – Led by Will Sanford with members Ted Gayle, Craig Spears, and Jerry Matthews. Next workday is Saturday, July 16th at 10:00 AM. No maintenance July 2nd-4th weekend due to holiday. Other upcoming trail days will be announced by list-serve and by web. The following ideas were suggested for the next workday:

•Clear briars on trail near gatehouse. Clint has a brusher. So does Ted. They will loan or bring.

•Clear trail near lake—it’s overgrown.

2.WCP Trail Closure– Led by Will Sanford. At county request, a plan was drafted and reviewed by several people and the County. No word back from the county on implementation.

3.810 Park Liaison– Led by Al Inigo. Al reported no change in status. The county is still trying to get VDOT permission to create an entrance to the park and parking lot off State Route 810. They are not yet on to formally deciding user group access.

4.O’hill Liaison– Led by Jay Dicharry. No news.

5.Sherando Trail Maintenance– Led by Matthew Wikswo. We identified potential candidates for maintenance: clearing brush off connector between Torry and Mill Creek trails and parts of Lower Torry could use re-benching. Clint Barnett will go scout it out and report back the need. Members suggested we volunteer to help at trail days or give initial input on design, but recognized need to not get overextended. Having a CAMBC contact who lived in the area would be ideal (if one exists and is willing to volunteer). Sue will get back to Dan, but then turn over communication as appropriate to others.

Next Meeting:
• Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 7:00 PM at Anna’s Pizza
Subcommittee Work – Goals and Updates
1. WCP Trail Maintenance – Led by Will Sanford with members Ted Gayle, Craig
Spears, and Jerry Matthews. Will is looking for crew leaders to help at trail days
or to work on their own, especially on weeknights. Upcoming trail days will be
announced by list-serve and by web. Stay tuned for some summer weeknight trail
work sessions on occasional Monday evenings. CAMBC members who worked
more than 3 trail sessions over the past year (June to May) will get free season
passes to Walnut Creek Park. This year’s passes will be awarded in the next
month. Next trail day: Saturday, May 7 at 10:00 AM. Next one after that:
Saturday, June 11, 2005 at 10:00 AM.
2. WCP Trail Closure– Led by Mike Hurley. Other members: Will Sanford. At
county request, a plan was drafted and reviewed by several people and the
County. Some tweaks still ongoing. Status: Per County request, group is
keeping it simple, emphasizing education, putting hotline and single sign in place
for notification of status, and getting plan into action by kick-off to summer
season on Memorial Day weekend. Need to draft informational flyers and
finalize plan details. Park will simply be “open” or “closed”. See Mike or Will
for more details on latest version.
3. 810 Park Liaison– Led by Al Inigo. Goals: Continue to develop CAMBC
relationship with the county and find out/stay on top of county (legal/public)
process for developing the new park and deciding uses for it so that mountain
bikers do not get left out. Status: The county is trying to get VDOT permission
to create an entrance to the park and parking lot off State Route 810. They are not
yet on to formally deciding user group access.
4. O’hill Liaison– Led by Jay Dicharry. Goals: establish formal POC with UVA
and UVA mountain bike club; look into issue of new road that will connect to
Fontaine and take away O’hill trails; look into issue of new Discovery center
parking area to happen up top. Trail maintenance was done at O’hill just prior to
the O’hill Meltdown. 80% of attendees were CAMBC members. Logs and
obstructions were cleared from the race course. No other updates available at this
meeting.
5. Sherando Trail Maintenance– Led by Matthew Wikswo. Goal: No trail
maintenance is currently scheduled as recent trail reports have all been favorable.
Contact Matthew Wikswo if you see a need, and he can set something up with the
Forest Service per our volunteer agreement.
6. Greenways Representation– Led by Clint and LoriAnne Barnett. Goals:
Establish CAMBC as a legitimate member of the Albemarle Greenways group.
Attend meetings and offer input to further the interests of mountain bikers.
Report back to club members on new developments, issues, etc. Use this
connection to try to develop our relationship with the RTF group. Status: No
updates as of this meeting.
7. Tools Acquisition – Led by Will Sanford, Mike Smoot, and Dave Wotton. The
committee drew up a $150 budget for new tools as well as a wish list for others
beyond this level. Status: Some of the tools have been purchased. We are
awaiting a pending donation from the UVA Mountain Bike Club to purchase the
rest. Eric Anderson is contacting UVA Mountain Bike Club.
8. Pisgah Weekends – Led by Ted Gayle. Memorial Day trip spots are filled up.
Stay tuned for another trip this fall.
9. Fall Foliage Ride– Led by Craig Spears and Ted Gayle. Goals: Communicate
with Festival organizer about ride leaders needs. Communication is ongoing.
CAMBC will support this ride. Tentative date: October 15, 2005.
10. Grants– Led by Sue George with members Ted Gayle and Clint Barnett. Goals:
look into grant options such as Kona Free ride grant, REI Toolkit, RTF grants
with County or other non-profits. Find out those for which we are eligible and
when to apply. Recruit help to write them as needed once identified. Status:
Some grants identified. We decided not to pursue the Free-ride grant due to time
constraints, but are working with County and club member Matt Day to get
permission for such activities anyway. Our radar is always on…
11. Women’s Ride– Led by Michele Co with help from Erin Johnston, Megan Ross,
and Sue George and others. Goals: establish women’s ride schedule and leaders
and publicize. Status: A schedule of women’s rides on 1st and 3rd Thursdays was
established and is on the web. First one was a success with 7 women. Erin and
Michele are working to coordinate with Richmond and Harrisonburg women for
some joint rides. Cary Hill is working on a flyer which will get distributed locally
soon.
12. Beginner Ride– Led by Michele Co, Brent VanDevender, and Ted Gayle. Goals:
establish beginner ride schedule with ride leaders for each and publicize. Note:
Beginner rides may be as short as 2-3 miles depending on who shows up. Status:
A schedule of beginner rides on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays was established and is on the
web. First one on April 26, 2005. Need to publicize.
13. Sunday Social Ride– Led by Craig Spear with help from Jason Hiser. Goals:
Establish Sunday social ride schedule and leaders and publicize. Status: Sunday
social rides are alive and well—happening weekly at WCP, Panorama, and in
urban environs as the weather permits.
14. WNR– Led by Sue George. Goals: continue leading regular night rides. Status:
Ongoing. Stay tuned for upcoming Rhododendron Rides in late May/early June.
15. Wild Ride– Led by interim leader, Matthew Wikswo. Goals: Identify candidate
dates and look into pavilion availability. See if Marty Quinn would like to lead or
co-lead this again. Status: At meeting, we decided to keep Wild Ride a 1 day
event at Sherando. Sue, Marty, Jace, Will, Matthew to advise on dates—need to
pick one very soon!
16. TAKMB– To be established at future meetings. Not until first Saturday in
October. We will host again.
17. Sponsorship Planning – Led by Matthew Wikswo with members Will Sanford.
Goals: Develop sponsorship plan and materials for recruiting sponsors for
CAMBC and present to club for decision on when/if to implement and to sign up
volunteers to input. Status: Preliminary plan was draft since last meeting and
rates for web advertising were decided based on site hits. They are finalizing the
write-up. To do: create sample web page with advertising space and recruit
volunteers to approach local shops about buying ad space and email footer space.
If you have business advertising experience and want to input, talk to leaders.
18. Club Governing Structure – Led by Sue with input from Michele Co, Julie
Jackson. Goals: Look into what if any formal options we might want to pursue
for more formal club governing structure. What do other clubs do? Is IMBA still
pursuing options to help with this? Keep bureaucracy low so it does not detract
from all the good things we are doing. Status: First draft of bylaws and articles
produced by Julie based on SMBC bylaws. Ongoing is effort to clarify elections
and other details.
19. Club Stickers & Business Cards – Led by Erin Johnston (with input from Clint
Barnett). Goals: look into getting us some CAMBC club stickers (cost, etc.).
Status: Sue designed and printed out sample CAMBC business cards. Erin
looked into quotes for stickers and other printed materials. At this meeting, we
decided to have Erin get a few more quotes and stickers and go forward with the
best option. We will sell for small profit as fundraising for the club.
20. T-shirts – Led by Clint Barnett (with input from Erin Johnston). Goals: look into
getting us some CAMBC club t-shirts (costs, gauge club interest, other details,
etc.). Status: See above. T-shirts were put on hold for now since club members
said we had enough of them and expressed more interested in stickers, which
represented smaller investment. Quotes were obtained from Blue Ridge Graphics
and Crazyhorse. Note: Frontrunner signs might be source for WCP wooden signs
in the future. Still to look into SMBC’s source for stickers.
21. GWNF Protection – Led by Sue George. Goals: continue work with pro-
Wilderness advocates, SMBC, IMBA, and others toward land protection
agreement. Status: Draft MOU was written for mt bikers and wilderness
advocate agreement for GWNF area. Changes to be made over next two months.
We’ve done some talking about strategies for moving forward with preservation
plan. Last meeting by telecon on March 29, 2005.

February 2005 in Harrisonburg. Clubs from around the state were interested, but
no further progress has been made.
23. Membership – Mike Smoot will send out membership reminders at least as often

Subcommittee Work
To increase member participation in the coordination of club activities and diversify club
responsibilities, but to minimize meeting time involving everyone, we split up club
activities into various subcommittee tasks and those who volunteered will handle them.
Subcommittees will work “offline” (not at major club meetings) to make progress on
their respective tasks. They can work using email, phone, in-person meetings—whatever
they prefer. If they have any questions or need guidance at any time, they should feel
free to ask for help. Subcommittees should report back to the club at the next meeting or
they can report to the club at mtb@cambc.org any time until then. In the meantime,
please also keep acting, informal board members apprised of progress and major issues
(Sue George, Mike Smoot, Will Sanford, Richard Shelley, Matthew Wikswo). If any
dates are decided for events, rides, etc. please let Sue George know so those dates can get
put on the web calendar asap. If any general info needs to go on the website, let Mike
Smoot know so he can put it up. If you are communicating with the County, please keep
Will Sanford (if not the entire “board”) in the loop since he is our primary county liaison,
and our relationship with the County is very important. Now, in no particular order…
1. WCP Trail Maintenance – Led by Will Sanford with members Ted Gayle, Craig
Spears, and Jerry Matthews. Will is looking for crew leaders to help at trail days
or to work on their own. Goals: recruit/train new leaders, determine maintenance
schedule for 2005 for the calendar. Get on county-wide trail maintenance listserve
(Mike Smoot).
2. WCP Trail Closure– Led by Mike Hurley. Other members: Will Sanford. Goals:
Develop written guidelines for the County on when to close WCP trails due to
weather or trail conditions. This may include closing some sections or the entire
park. What, when, and how is up to the subcommittee. The county has asked us
to do this and will provide a phone hotline plus someone to update a sign at the
park during weekdays. (Note: Leader should also contact Eric, a colleague of
Jay’s who lives near the park and expressed interest in this subcommittee at the
TCC visit and ask Sue George to forward some related info that might help).
3. 810 Park Liaison– Led by Al Inigo. Goals: Continue to develop CAMBC
relationship with the county and find out/stay on top of county (legal/public)
process for developing the new park and deciding uses for it so that mountain
bikers do not get left out. (Talk to Will Sanford to get contact info).
4. O’hill Liaison– Led by Jay Dicharry. Goals: establish formal POC with UVA
and UVA mountain bike club; look into issue of new road that will connect to
Fontaine and take away O’hill trails; look into issue of new Discovery center
parking area to happen up top; try to get some trail maintenance going there,
ideally with the UVA mt bike club. UVA Mt bike club liaison is Drew
Sanderford.
5. Sherando Trail Maintenance– Led by Matthew Wikswo. Goal: Set up a spring
work day at Sherando to keep the CAMBC volunteer agreement alive.
Note: Contact
Dan Mahon, Albemarle county person who invited CAMBC to join the
Greenways group.
7. Tools Acquisition – Led by Will Sanford, Mike Smoot, and Dave Wotton. At this
meeting, the club authorized an expenditure of $150 on new trail maintenance
tools. Goals: Draw up a budget for new tools (including making calls to find out
if we can get some “deals”), get permission to purchase, then acquire. Notes:
budget may be for amount greater than $150 because some members suggested
they might donate a tool to the club if they know what we need. If greater than
$150, prioritize order for acquisition. Club may allocate more money in the
future for tools acquisition.
8. Memorial Day Pisgah Weekend – Led by Ted Gayle. Goals: coordinate CAMBC
member involvement in a weekend of riding in Pisgah National Forest. Publicize
opportunity and coordinate interested parties.
9. Fall Foliage Ride– Led by Craig Spears and Ted Gayle. Goals: Communicate
with Festival organizer about ride leaders needs. Decide whether to commit
CAMBC and recruit ride leaders as appropriate. Get festival contact info from
Matthew Wikswo.
10. Grants– Led by Sue George with members Ted Gayle and Clint Barnett. Look
into grant options such as Kona Free ride grant, REI Toolkit, RTF grants with
County or other non-profits. MORE and SMBC might know more. Find out
those for which we are eligible and when to apply. Recruit help to write them as
needed once identified.
11. Women’s Ride– Led by Michele Co with help from Erin Johnston, Megan Ross,
and Sue George. Goals: establish women’s ride schedule and leaders and
publicize. Note: Erin will focus on inter-club women’s rides.
12. Beginner Ride– Led by Michele Co, Brent VanDevender, and Ted Gayle. Goals:
establish beginner ride schedule with ride leaders for each and publicize. Note:
Beginner rides may be as short as 2-3 miles depending on who shows up.
Recommended target: a minimum of 1x per month (with optional rain date?).
13. Sunday Social Ride– Led by Craig Spear with help from Jason Hiser. Goals:
Establish Sunday social ride schedule and leaders and publicize.
14. WNR– Led by Sue George. Goals: continue leading regular night rides.
15. Wild Ride– Led by interim leader, Matthew Wikswo. Not much to do yet
because the event isn’t until September. Goals: Identify candidate dates and look
into pavilion availability. See if Marty Quinn would like to lead or co-lead this
again. Look into tying in a work day as part of a Wild Ride weekend.
16. TAKMB– To be established at future meetings. Not until October.
17. Sponsorship Planning – Led by Matthew Wikswo with members Will Sanford.
Goals: Develop sponsorship plan and materials for recruiting sponsors for
CAMBC and present to club for decision on when/if to implement and to sign up
volunteers to input.
18. Club Governing Structure – Led by TBD with input from Michele Co, Julie
Jackson (if she’s available and interested), Sue George. Goals: Look into what if
any formal options we might want to pursue for more formal club governing
structure. What do other clubs do? Is IMBA still pursuing options to help with
this? Keep bureaucracy low so it does not detract from all the good things we are
doing. Look back at what Andrea Laue was doing a year and a half ago. Brent
VanDevender suggested maybe even just formalizing an overall club policy and
circulating.
19. Club Stickers – Led by Erin Johnston (with input from Clint Barnett). Goals:
look into getting us some CAMBC club stickers (cost, etc.). Note: Erin, please
also ask Sue George about club business cards (like Nittany Valley Mt Bike Club
example).
20. T-shirts – Led by Clint Barnett (with input from Erin Johnston). Goals: look into
getting us some CAMBC club t-shirts (costs, gauge club interest, other details,
etc.). Hold on actually getting t-shirts until sponsorship subcommittee is further
along.
21. GWNF Protection – Led by Sue George. Goals: continue work with pro-
Wilderness advocates, SMBC, IMBA, and others toward land protection
agreement. Write MOU for user groups involved so far.
22. VA State MTB Association – Forgot to mention this at meeting, but led by Sue
George and Mike Smoot. Goals: Attend upcoming meeting to talk about forming
a state-wide mountain bike association. Report back to club. Represent
CAMBC’s interests.
