Hi Folks,
I know we’ve all been shut in way too much this winter and itching to ride trails. However, trails are still too wet and snow covered AND they’ve all received a lot of damage and are sorely in need of some repairs and maintenance. Toward that end, with a great weather forecast for this weekend (sunny and lower to mid 50’s both days), we have two days of trail work slated.
· Saturday, March 6, 9am – 12 noon: Preddy Creek, trailwork with Albemarle County Parks & Rec. Contact Will Sanford.
· Sunday, March 7, 9am – 12 noon: Walnut Creek, trailwork with CAMBC. Contact Alex Kurland or Dave Stackhouse
Our goals for each day are to assess winter damage from snow, downfall, and rain, and to clear as much of the trail as possible. It is unlikely there will be any “dirt” work. Our work will require loppers, trimmers, folding saws, bowsaws, and chainsaw work (if we have a qualified operator). We will also need to simply try and walk the full length of each trail and mark any and all places needing attention on a trail map. ACPR crews will be going out later next week to do more maintenance so this effort to “survey the damage” and mark the maps is extremely important.
IMPORTANT: Wear waterproof boots and work gloves, dress for the weather, bring water and any trimmer tools or folding saws you may have. We also need anyone who has a chainsaw to help out. We’ll have the chainsaw CAMBC owns and looking for qualified operator(s) with appropriate protective gear.
I know we’ll all be itching to ride these trails very soon as they dry up but right now there are reports of “hundreds” of downed trees and limbs blocking the trails. A good turnout this weekend will be a great step toward opening up the trails for riding soon. Please try to show up for one or both trail days. Watch for updates later in the week in the event more weather prevents either of these work days.
