IMBA's Trail Care Crew is coming to Charlottesville to talk trails and teach "sustainable" trailbuilding, which means building trails that last a long time and require minimal maintenance. This helps reduce trail damage, protects the environment, and enhances visitor enjoyment. All events listed below are free and open to the public.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2
7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. AROUND THE WORLD WITH IMBA AND CAMBC SLIDESHOW
Come mingle with fellow
riders and trail users and learn about IMBA's work around the world.
IMBA's Jill Van Winkle and Chris Bernhardt will present a fun and
exciting slideshow about riding and travel adventures in the U.S.,
Italy, Wales, Australia, and beyond. The slideshow will also feature
some favorite shots from local CAMBC rides in 2004!

Performance Bike Shop in Seminole Square Shopping Center of Rt 29 North.
- Directions: Take Rt 29 North from Charlottesville. After crossing
the Hydraulic Road intersection just north of the Rt 250 bypass, turn
Right into Seminole Square Shopping Center. Performance Bike Shop is
just a few doors down from Giant grocery store.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3
7:00 p.m. -8:30 p.m. GROUP NIGHT RIDE
Join us for a night
ride at
Panorama Farms, one of Charlottesville's local riding
venues. Bring your helmet, your lights, and some warm clothes to
fight off the winter chill! The ride will happen weather and trail
conditions permitting, so please check
www.cambc.org for any last minute announcements if the conditions are
questionable. The ride may be moved to the relatively drier venue,
O'hill, if conditions at Panorama Farms are too wet.
- Location: Panorama Trails.
- Directions: From Charlottesville and points south, take a left onto Rt.
649 (towards the airport) north of Charlottesville. Bear left onto Rt.
606 across from the airport. Then go left onto Rt. 743 Earlysville Rd at
T-intersection. Proceed South on Rt. 743 approx. 1.5 mi. before
making right onto Panorama Rd. (Rt.844). Panorama Farms is at the
end of the road.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. IMBA TRAILBUILDING SCHOOL
Get your hands dirty and learn how to build sustainable and fun singletrack!
The school has two parts and includes three hours of classroom instruction
followed by hands-on time in the field learning trailbuilding
techniques. Come learn from the best! Topics include designing a
contour trail, controlling water flow, building effective trail
structures, routine trail maintenance, and mechanical trailbuilding.
The fieldwork will be
hands-on trailbuilding, so come prepared. You'll probably be most
comfortable in long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, plus extra layers
in case it is cold. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for outdoor use and
bring water, snacks, work gloves, sunscreen, and a hat. If you have
any trailbuilding tools--pulaskis, McLeods, rakes, picks, hoes,
shovels--please bring them, too.
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. IMBA Trailbuilding School Classroom Session
- Location: Albemarle County Office Building
(in the board room on the 2nd floor) on the corner of
McIntire & Preston Avenue in Charlottesville, VA
- Directions: From Rt 250 Bypass on the North side of Charlottesville,
turn South (only way you can go) across from McIntire Park on McIntire Road.
The county
office building will be located on your right as you approach the
intersection of Preston Avenue and McIntire Road. If you are looking
at a building that looks like a big, old high school, you are in the
right place!
12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. Lunch
12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Transfer to Walnut Creek Park
1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. IMBA Trailbuilding School Fieldwork Session
- Location: Walnut Creek Park.
- Directions: From
Charlottesville, take Rt 29 South. Turn left on Rt. 708 Red Hill
Road. Turn right on Rt 631 Old Lynchburg Road. Go one-half mile.
The park is on your left. Drive in until reaching the first parking
lot on your right (aka "cycle" parking lot).
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5
9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. IMBA TRAILBUILDING SCHOOL FIELDWORK SESSION
Practice what you
learned yesterday in class! Just like yesterday afternoon, come
prepared. You'll probably be most comfortable in long pants and a
long-sleeved shirt, plus extra layers in case it is cold. Wear
sturdy shoes suitable for outdoor use and bring water, snacks, work
gloves, sunscreen, and a hat. If you have any trailbuilding
tools--pulaskis, McLeods, rakes, picks, hoes, shovels--please bring
them, too.

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. GROUP MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE
Meet at lower parking
lot at Walnut Creek Park. Come check out Walnut Creek Park's great
trails and admire all the work we've done this weekend! Bring
helmet, spare tube, water, and extra food. We will break into groups
as necessary to accommodate riders of all abilities. The ride will
happen weather and trail conditions permitting.
